CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team finished 3-1 at its own Red Dragon Classic after splitting two matches during the second day of competition. The nationally 24th-ranked Red Dragons lost in five sets to 11th-ranked Mount Union, but bounced back to win in four sets over the University of Rochester.
Juniata and Mount Union, each in the Red Dragon Classic for the first time in the tournament's 29-year history, finished with 4-0 records. Juniata won the tournament title based on a fewest sets played tiebreaker (14 sets for Juniata versus 16 for Mount Union). Cortland was one of three schools, along with Nazareth and Lebanon Valley, to finish with 3-1 records.

Cortland won the first two sets against Mount Union, 25-19 and 26-24, before the Purple Raiders came back to win the last three sets, 25-21, 25-13 and 15-6. Sophomore Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks), who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Red Dragons with 12 kills and also added seven digs. Senior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) totaled 11 kills and junior Mary Kelly (Guilderland) finished with seven kills and a team-high five blocks.
Freshman Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) recorded 31 assists and senior Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) finished with a career-high 33 digs.
Cortland defeated Rochester by set scores of 25-15, 27-25, 19-25 and 25-15. Hintz registered team highs of 15 kills and three blocks and Givelechian added 14 kills and seven digs. Senior Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) contributed six kills and 10 digs to the winning effort.
Silk paced the defense with 23 digs, while Roberts rang up 37 assists and 10 digs.
The 12-team tournament field features seven 2012 NCAA Div. III tournament participants, including national quarterfinalist Clarkson and second-round teams Cortland, Juniata, Mount Union and Richard Stockton, along with Baruch and Nazareth. Four schools are ranked nationally this season – Mount Union (11th), Juniata (20th), Clarkson (23rd) and Cortland.
Cortland will compete at the Vassar Invitational Sept. 6-7. The Red Dragons will face MIT and NYU Friday and Vassar and Stevens Institute Saturday.
