ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. – The Cortland women's volleyball team swept Cairn University, 25-20, 25-14, 25-19, to salvage a split of its two matches during the first day of competition at the Elizabethtown University Days Inn Blue Jay Classic.
The Red Dragons, who lost earlier in the evening in three sets to Richard Stockton, are now 6-9 on the season. Cortland will face York College (Pa.) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Salisbury University at 2:30 p.m. in the predetermined schedule.
Senior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) led Cortland in the win over Cairn, which was formerly known as Philadelphia Biblical University until 2012. Hintz finished with 11 kills, a .400 attack percentage, five blocks and two aces.
Sophomore
Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) recorded eight kills, six digs and two blocks and freshman
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) totaled 32 assists, seven digs and three blocks.
Junior
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) and freshman
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) added five kills apiece. Kelly also led the team with seven blocks, two solo, and Czeczotka had 10 digs and a team-high four aces. Freshman
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led Cortland with 24 digs and served two aces from her libero position.
Brigid Shehan led Cairn (7-3) with seven kills and 23 digs.
In Cortland's opening match, the Red Dragons were defeated by Richard Stockton, 25-13, 25-22, 25-11. Hintz finished with eight kills and only one error in 16 attempts for a .438 attack percentage. Senior
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) distributed 20 assists and McGuirk finished with 21 digs. Givelechian, Czeczotka and Kelly put down four kills each.
Nicole Serekian led the five-time defending New Jersey Athletic Conference champion Ospreys (6-5) with seven kills and 11 digs.
