OSWEGO, N.Y. – Senior
Erin Smith (Greene) matched her career high with six points on two goals and two assists to lead the nationally 18th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 7-2 victory at Oswego in the annual "Dragon Sword" game Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC with the win, while the Lakers fell to 2-4 and 1-1.
Freshman Gabrielle Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) also tallied a pair of goals for Cortland and leads the team with 11 on the season. Senior
Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) recorded one goal and one assist, junior Abbey Wentlent (Greene) and freshman
Shelby Underwood (Marathon) each scored a goal and sophomore
Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie
Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made two saves.
Grace Rinaldi and Ashley Collins scored for the Lakers, and Ashley Fiorille contributed an assist. Goalie Grace Lombardi turned aside nine shots.
Smith gave Cortland an early 1-0 lead, finishing off a give-and-go with Vogl at the three minute, 59 second mark. Wentlent converted a penalty stroke at 23:59 to make it a 2-0 game before Underwood pushed the advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 29:33 after she beat two defenders. Rinaldi put Oswego on the scoreboard just over two minutes later off Fiorille's assist, but Stein answered with her first of the game at 33:59 to give Cortland a 4-1 lead at the break.
Smith assisted on Stein's second goal on a penalty corner at 52:52 to increase the lead to 5-1. The Lakers pulled to within 5-2 32 seconds later on Collins' penalty-stroke goal. The Red Dragons finished off the scoring when Smith scored from the middle of the circle at 59:22 and Vdoviak converted a pass from Smith at 61:41.
Cortland claimed the "Dragon Sword" for the 14th straight year. The winner's prize is an actual three-foot long Samurai-style sword with a red and white metallic sheath, a dragon's head handle and a dragon's wing and talon making up the hand guard. Oswego graduates Michael and Kimberlee (Bennett) Champitto donated the sword in 2000 as a trophy for the annual Cortland-Oswego field hockey winner
