CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland lost in five sets to Potsdam after holding a 2-0 lead, but rebounded to sweep Oneonta in three sets during SUNYAC women's volleyball conference play at Corey Gym. Potsdam won by scores of 16-25, 17-25, 25-12, 25-18 and 17-15. Cortland beat Oneonta, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-20.
The Red Dragons are 2-1 in the SUNYAC and 10-11 overall. There are six league matches remaining - three in Potsdam Oct. 11-12 and three in Buffalo Oct. 25-26. Potsdam finished 3-0 on the weekend. The Bears beat Oswego in the final match of the day, 25-22, 16-25, 25-18, 25-11. Oneonta beat Oswego to open the day, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23.
In the match versus Potsdam, Cortland led 14-12 before the Bears fought off two match points. The Red Dragons also led 15-14, but Potsdam scored the final three points for the set and the match.
Senior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) led Cortland with 15 kills and six blocks. Junior
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) and sophomore
Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) added eight kills apiece and freshman
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) totaled 39 assists and six aces.
Freshman
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led the team with 28 digs, freshman
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) had 21 digs and senior
Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) added 11 digs.
Czeczotka paced the Red Dragons versus Oneonta with 11 kills and added three blocks. Senior
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) totaled nine kills, six digs and three blocks. Kelly finished with five kills and seven blocks, Hintz had five kills and four blocks, and Roberts registered 26 assists and 11 digs. McGuirk chipped in with 10 digs.
Cortland will host Clarkson on Tuesday, October 1 at 6 p.m.
