Josh Daves won the long jump with an ECAC-qualifying distance of 22 feet, 1.5 inches
ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior
Josh Daves (Huntington) and sophomore
Jerel Williams (East Islip) posted ECAC championship qualifying performances at the Cornell University Southern Tier Collegiate Open. The non-scoring meet featured more than a half dozen college teams and several club and unattached athletes.
Daves finished first among 16 competitors in the long jump at 6.74 meters (22' 1.5"), while Williams was fourth of 16 in the 60-meter dash in 7.09 seconds (7.06 in prelims).
Three Red Dragons in addition to Daves placed among the top half of the field in the long jump. Sophomore
Jimmy Moyer (Oneida) was sixth at 6.51 meters (21' 4.25"), junior
Jon Granger (Ticonderoga) placed seventh at 6.36 meters (20' 10.5") and freshman
Matt Hicks (Horseheads) was eighth at 6.22 meters (20' 5").
Along with Williams, sophomore
Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) and sophomore
Keewan Rondinello (Liverpool) each competed in the 60-meter dash finals. Saint Germain was sixth (7.14) and Rondinello finished seventh (7.16).
Four Cortland sprinters finished in the top 10 out of 25 athletes in the 200-meter dash. Rondinello was fourth in 22.93 seconds, Saint Germain placed seventh (23.40), Williams was eighth (23.49) and sophomore
Darrius Samples (Islandia/Hauppauge) finished ninth (23.75).
Freshman
Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) and junior
Zach Zieniewicz (Seaford) finished third (8.78 seconds) and fourth (8.79 seconds), respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior
Eric Wong (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) finished seventh of 14 in the 400-meter dash (52.66) and senior
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) was eighth of 17 in the mile (4:30.41).
Cortland returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Cornell Upstate Challenge at 9:30 a.m.
