Kevin McMahon Reaches 1,000-Point Milestone in 76-54 Win vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and became the 22nd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points as Cortland defeated visiting Fredonia, 76-54, in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest.

McMahon entered the game 12 points shy of the 1,000-point mark and reached the milestone on a layup just more than a minute into the second half. He finished 5-of-10 from the floor with a 3-pointer and 4-of-5 from the foul line and also handed out three assists.

Junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) led Cortland (9-3, 4-1 SUNYAC) with 16 points and six assists and matched his career high with eight rebounds. Sophomore Brendan Ferguson (New York/Xavier) scored a career-best 14 points and senior Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) added 12 points and six rebounds. Ferguson hit 4-of-5 shots from the 3-point arc.

Also for the Red Dragons, junior Matt McGowan (Lake George) finished with six points and eight rebounds and freshman Tyree Glascoe (West Hempstead) made 2-of-4 treys and ended with six points and three assists.

Fredonia (3-8, 0-4 SUNYAC) was led by Robert Lyles (Peekskill) with 20 points and four assists. He hit 7-of-11 shots. Tyrone Clark (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) registered 15 points and five steals.

Cortland trailed 19-18 with 11:24 left in the first half before going on a 10-2 run to take a 28-21 lead with 7:51 remaining. Lyles hit a 3-pointer at the 6:31 mark, but the Red Dragons finished the half on a 17-2 run and led 45-26 at halftime. Spendjian scored seven of his 12 points in that decisive stretch.

The Red Dragons went up by 21 on McMahon's 1,000-point layup and led by at least 13 points the entire second half.

Cortland, which has now won five straight games, will host Oneonta on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
