Red Dragon Women Hold On for 132-130 Dual Win vs. Visiting New Paltz

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland finished second and third in the final event as the Red Dragons held on to defeat New Paltz, 132-130, in a home dual meet.

The Red Dragons led 126-119 entering the meet's last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. New Paltz won the race for 11 points, but Cortland earned four points for second and two for third to pull out the two-point win. Senior M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks), freshman Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley), sophomore Chelsey Simon (Oneida) and senior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) finished second in 3:48.54, while sophomore Ally Baraban (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East), junior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis), sophomore Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) and senior Caitlin Lanigan (West Seneca/West Seneca West) finished third in 3:49.62.

Senior Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) won three events to lead the Red Dragons. She captured the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.68), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.79) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.48). Grossman won the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.60), Culmo took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle (25.44) and freshman Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL) touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.52).

The combination of Ford, junior Michaela Auer (Oswego), Hickey and Culmo opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley (1:52.30).

Caputo turned in second-place efforts in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06.95) and 500-yard freestyle (5:26.37) and Simon finished second in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.81) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.52). Simon lost the latter race by less than three tenths of a second.

Ford finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.96, less than four tenths of second behind Grossman's winning time. Auer was the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.69).

Cortland entered the meet's lone two divers as exhibitions. Sophomore Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) posted the top scores on both the 1-meter (249.23 points) and 3-meter (256.05 points) boards. Senior Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) scored 204.97 points on the 1-meter board and 222.23 points in 3-meter diving.

Cortland will compete at the RPI Invitational Saturday at noon and will host Oswego on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m.
