Cortland Registers Best Defensive Performance in 15 Years in 70-35 Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cortland men's basketball team posted its best defensive scoring effort in 15 years as the Red Dragons routed host Fredonia, 70-35, in a SUNYAC contest.

The Red Dragons (11-7, 6-5 SUNYAC) allowed their lowest point total since a 59-31 win at Potsdam on Jan. 30, 1999. Cortland held the Blue Devils to 27 percent shooting overall (12-of-44) and just seven percent (1-of-14) on 3-pointers. Cortland made 12-of-28 shots from the 3-point arc (43 percent) and shot 44 percent overall.

Junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) led Cortland with 16 points and five assists and also grabbed five rebounds. He connected on four of his six 3-pointers and finished 6-of-13 overall. Senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) registered his ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 6-of-10 from the floor.

Senior Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) added eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) and freshman Michael Russo (Syracuse/Liverpool) scored six points each.

Tyrone Clark led Fredonia (4-14, 1-10 SUNYAC) with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Robert Lyles scored seven points, while John Kovach and Mikhail Atkins added six points apiece.

Cortland led 23-8 just past the midway point of the first half and held a 26-14 halftime lead. The advantage grew to 20 points at the 13:13 mark of the second half and was 30 points at 55-25 on a Russo 3-pointer with 8:09 left.

Cortland will play at Buffalo State Saturday at 4 p.m. Cortland is currently tied for fourth place in the SUNYAC, along with Oswego, at 6-5, while Buffalo State is tied with Oneonta for sixth place with 5-6 league records.
