Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and sophomore
Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) recorded career highs of 18 points and eight rebounds as Cortland defeated Catholic University, 62-56, in the opening round of the Cardinals' Holiday Inn College Park Classic.
Cortland (5-3) will face Misericordia University (Pa.) in the championship game Sunday at 4 p.m., while host Catholic (5-5) will play St. Joseph's (Maine) in the consolation game at 2 p.m. Misericordia defeated St. Joseph's, 68-65, in Saturday's first game.
McMahon made 8-of-17 shots from the field and Estarfaa hit 7-of-11 shots. Estarfaa registered 13 points and five rebounds in the second half. Junior

Steve Limberiou led Catholic with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting. He made 4-of-11 shots from 3-point range. Kyle Phanord added 17 points and three assists, Corey Stanford had a game-high 13 rebounds and Bryson Fonville totaled six assists and five rebounds. Phanor made three of his nine 3-point attempts and was 5-of-11 overall from the floor.
Cortland led 48-40 with 7:59 remaining after a
Brendan Ferguson (New York/Xavier) 3-pointer and two Estarfaa layups. Catholic, however, eventually tied the game at 49-49 on a Stanford layup with 3:15 left. With 2:45 left, Estarfaa hit a driving layup, but was called for a foul after he released the shot. Phanord made the ensuing two free throws to tie the game at 51-51.
The Red Dragons missed two field goals and a free throw on their next trip down the floor, but registered offensive rebounds after each of those misses to retain possession. Sophomore
T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) then hit a 3-pointer for his lone points of the game with 1:07 left to give Cortland a 54-51 lead.
Catholic missed a 3-pointer on its next possession. Herron converted on a 3-point play with 30 seconds left to put Cortland up 57-51, and the Red Dragons led by at least four from that point.
The hosts led twice early in the game, but Cortland took an 11-9 lead on a McMahon 3-pointer with 12:20 left in the first half and never trailed again. The Red Dragons held a 20-11 lead with 8:57 left in the half, but the Cardinals went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to one. Estarfaa and Herron made 3-pointers to put Cortland up 28-21 and the Red Dragons led 28-23 at halftime.
Both teams finished the game shooting only 35 percent from the floor. Cortland shot 25 percent from 3-point range (7-of-28) and 75 percent from the foul line (9-of-12), while Catholic was 26 percent from the arc (7-of-27) and 73 percent from the foul line (11-of-15).
