POTSDAM, N.Y. – Aishvina Arasu and Victoria Kirkemo registered 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as nationally 12th-ranked Clarkson defeated visiting Cortland in straight sets in a non-league women's volleyball match.
The Golden Knights (16-2) won by scores of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-16. The Red Dragons dropped to 8-13 with the loss.
Cortland was led by freshman
Janine Patora's (Salt Point/Arlington) seven kills and senior
Mary Kelly's (Guilderland) six kills. Kelly finished with a .312 attack percentage and Patora with a .217 percentage.
Sophomore
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) totaled 10 digs and freshman
Jessie Allen (Syracuse/West Genesee) served three aces. Allen and junior
Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) led Cortland with two blocks each.
Arasu finished with a .333 attack percentage (three errors in 24 attempts) and Kirkemo hit at a .250 clip (four errors in 24 attempts). Lauren Hutchinson registered six kills with one error in 11 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage and Kirstie Shurie ended with 30 assists. Hannah Jones led Clarkson with four aces.
Cortland rallied from a 23-17 deficit in the second set to close to within 23-21 before Clarkson scored the final two points. The teams were also tied 14-14 in the third set before the hosts finished the match on an 11-2 run.
Cortland will be idle until hosting Ithaca next Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m.
