PITTSBURGH, PA. – The Cortland women's cross country team, ranked seventh in the Atlantic Region, narrowly captured the team title at the 17-team Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
The Red Dragons finished with 59 points, one ahead of both Div. I University of Pittsburgh and Div. II Seton Hill University of Pennsylvania. Carnegie Mellon, ranked 27th nationally in Div. III, finished fourth with 77 points and Div. I Cleveland State was fifth with 124 points.
All of Cortland's top seven runners placed in the top 25 of the 193-runner field, including its five point scorers in the top 20. Junior
Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) led the Red Dragons with a fifth-place time of 19 minutes on the 5,000-meter course. Seton Hill's Meagen Carter won the race in 18:26.
Senior
Ameena Dye (DeWitt/Jamesville-DeWitt) posted an 11th-place time of 19:16, followed by junior
Michelyn Little (Voorheesville/Clayton A. Bouton) in 12th place (19:20) and junior
Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) in 13th place (19:23). Junior
Kerri Culhane (Sayville) helped secure the team victory with an 18th-place finish in 19:31, three spots ahead of Pittsburgh's fifth-highest finisher.
Rounding out Cortland's top seven were sophomore
Allison Schumann (North Salem) in 23rd place (19:39) and freshman
Megan Wagner (Niskayuna) in 25th place (19:41).
Cortland returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Lafayette University Leopard Invitational in Easton, Pa.
