#20 Red Dragons Defeat Oswego, 6-0, in 15th Annual Dragon Sword Game

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 20th-ranked Cortland field hockey team built a 5-0 lead at the half and defeated Oswego, 6-0, in SUNYAC action Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium White field. The Red Dragons improved to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference and finished their league slate without allowing a goal for the first time since the 2001 season. The Lakers fell to 6-8 and 1-4 with the loss. The game was the 15th annual Dragon Sword game between the two programs.

Sophomore Alexa Sanzone (Rome/Rome Free Academy) led Cortland with two goals, Junior Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) and sophomore Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) each contributed one goal and one assist. Senior Abigail Wentlent (Greene) and junior Sara O'Brien (Amherst) tallied one goal apiece, and freshman Victoria Dean (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) did not face a shot in the game.

For the Lakers, freshman goalie Sarita Charap (Ocean City, NJ) registered 24 saves. Sophomore Corinne Kimmelman (Riverhead) and freshman Emily Brockwell (Northport) each recorded a defensive save.

Wentlent gave Cortland the lead nine minutes, 23 seconds into the game, converting a penalty stroke into the upper left of the goal after Charap covered the ball in the circle. Stein made it a 2-0 game at 13:42 with a deflection at the left post before Vogl scored an unassisted goal on a shot through traffic that snuck inside the right post at 17:44.

O'Brien increased Cortland's advantage to 4-0 with a one-time shot on a loose ball right in front at 23:43, and Sanzone connected on her first goal of the game 2:44 before the half when she knocked in her own rebound after Brockwell made a defensive save on her initial shot.

Sanzone completed the scoring in the game with just over five minutes left in regulation. Dean sent a pass into the circle where Sanzone deflected the ball out of midair and under the crossbar for her eighth goal of the season.

The Red Dragons, who will host a SUNYAC Tournament semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 5,, wrap up their regular season with home non-conference games versus William Smith, Saturday at 1 p.m. and St. Lawrence, next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
