PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Cortland posted a team .400 attack percentage on its way to a convincing 25-10, 25-16, 25-6 victory over Brockport in SUNYAC women's volleyball conference play at Plattsburgh.
The Red Dragons improved to 4-3 in the league (11-17 overall) and are tied with Geneseo and Oswego for third place with two matches remaining. Cortland will play Saturday versus Plattsburgh at 12:30 p.m. and Buffalo State at 3 p.m. The top six teams in the SUNYAC regular-season standings will qualify for the league's postseason tournament.
Cortland finished with 35 kills and only seven errors in 70 attack attempts compared to a minus-.046 attack percentage for the Golden Eagles (17-11, 3-4 SUNYAC). Senior
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) and junior
Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) each finished with attack percentages of at least .800 in the match. Kelly recorded eight kills and no errors in 10 attempts for an .800 percentage and led the team with seven blocks. Hayward had five kills and no errors in six attempts for an .833 attack percentage.
Freshman
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) led Cortland with 12 kills. She recorded a .391 attack percentage and six digs. Sophomore
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) had 28 assists and six blocks and sophomore
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) totaled eight digs and two aces.
Also for the Red Dragons, freshman
Jessie Allen (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished with three blocks and freshman
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) served two aces. Freshman
Ashley Ruggiero (Smithtown/Smithtown East) and sophomore
Victoria Grix (Pearl River) added six digs apiece.
Cortland used a 13-1 run in the first set to turn a 6-6 tie into a 19-7 lead. Patora had four kills, Kelly registered three kills and three blocks (one solo) and McGuirk had an ace and a kill during that key stretch. In the second set, the Red Dragons went on a 6-1 run, keyed by two Pollock kills and two May aces, to take a 13-7 lead and led by at least five points the rest of the set. Cortland jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the final set and was never threatened.
