Freshmen Lead Red Dragons to Season-Opening 2-2 Tie at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cortland men's ice hockey team opened its 2014-15 season with a 2-2 overtime tie at Fredonia in a SUNYAC contest. The game was the debut of Cortland head coach Joe Cardarelli. Cortland and Fredonia have now tied in their game at Fredonia each of the last four seasons.

Freshmen Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) and Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) scored for the Red Dragons, while freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) made 44 saves. Weigman made 16 saves during a scoreless third period and stopped five shots on goal in the five-minute overtime.

Zach White and Stephen Castriota scored for Fredonia, which was also playing its season and league opener. Jeff Flagler recorded 26 saves.

Fredonia took a 1-0 lead when White's shot from the high right point deflected off Weigman's glove 7:52 into the game. Taylor Bourne assisted on the play with a pass from behind the net. Cortland pulled even with 2:21 left in the first as Nolan converted a Fredonia neutral-zone turnover with a shot from the top of the right circle. Freshman Darren McCormick (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) assisted Nolan with a pass from behind the Fredonia cage.

Cortland grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the second period as Broderick scored following a scrum in front of the net. Junior Josh LaRose (Liverpool/Syracuse Stars) and senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) earned assists as LaRose brought the puck up the left sideboards and passed it behind the net to Zappia, who in turn set up Broderick.

Fredonia knotted the game 10:23 into the second on a 2-on-1 rush. Jared Wynia chipped the puck ahead to Brian Doust, who skated along the left boards before passing to Castriota in front of the net. Neither team scored nor committed a penalty during the third period or overtime.

Cortland will play a SUNYAC game at Buffalo State Saturday at 7 p.m.
