WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. - The Cortland women's golf team held off three teams in a tight pack to finish in sixth place at the 16-school Williams College Fall Invitational. The two-day event was held at the Taconic Golf Club.

Cortland was sixth after Day 1 with a 345, then posted a 341 Sunday for a total of 686. The Red Dragons finished ahead of Mt. Holyoke (346-343-689) and Amherst (356-346-702), marking the first time this season they beat those schools, and Vassar placed ninth (359-345-704). Williams won the team title with a 624 (315-309), followed by Ithaca at 641 (320-321).

Junior Melissa Rath (East Northport/Northport) tied for 16th place out of 83 golfers with a 165. She scored an 85 Saturday and an 80 Sunday. Junior Carly Peters (St. James/Smithtown East) placed 26th with a 172 (87-85) and senior Samantha Morley (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) tied for 27th with a 173 (85-88).

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Bri Sovring (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished 34th as an individual entry with an 89 each day for a 178 total. Cortland's other two team competitors were freshman Taylor O'Halloran (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy), who tied for 37th (88-92-180), and freshman Anna Haley (Drexel Hill, PA/Bonner & Prendergast), who tied for 44th (96-88-184). Shelby Shote of Williams was tournament medalist with a six-over par 148 (73-75).

Cortland will complete the fall season next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11, at the Wittenberg Pat Clouse Invitational in Springfield, Ohio.
