Marcantonio Repeats as SUNYAC Champion; Red Dragons Finish Second

Senior Nick Marcantonio (left) captured his second straight individual SUNYAC title
BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Senior Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) won the individual conference title for the second consecutive season, but the Cortland men's cross country team was edged out by Geneseo for the team title at the SUNYAC Championships hosted by The College at Brockport on a cold and damp Saturday morning.

The Knights placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 15 to record 54 points as a team to prevent Cortland from winning back-to-back conference titles. The Red Dragons, ranked tied for 35th nationally, had three runners place in the top five, finishing with 58 points. Oneonta was third with 84 points, followed by Fredonia (112), New Paltz (124), Oswego (180), Brockport (194), Plattsburgh (207), Buffalo St. (216) and Potsdam (330).

Marcantonio won the 8,000-meter race in 25 minutes, 37.3 seconds, narrowly edging out senior teammate Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) as the two crossed the finish line virtually in a dead heat. Iacovelli's official time was 25:37.4. Joining the duo on the all-league first team with a top-five finish was sophomore Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) in fifth place (25:47.2). Ryan also qualified for the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame with his top-five finish. To earn induction into the Hall of Fame, a runner must earn a top-five finish once, a top-10 finish twice or a top-15 finish three times.

Junior Joe Ray (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) turned in a 17th-place finish in 26:15.5 as Cortland's fourth scorer. Freshman Jesse Perrone (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) rounded out the Red Dragons' top five with a 36th-place finish in 26:52.7. Freshman Alex Hall (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) crossed the finish line right behind Perrone in 37th (26:56.1), while senior Tim Odin (Northport) finished 42nd in 27:11.3 to complete Cortland's top seven.
