Red Dragons Place Third at NCAA Regional; Four Earn All-Region Honors

Senior Jarred Iacovelli earned all-region honors with his 10th-place finish
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The nationally 29th-ranked Cortland men's cross country team placed third out of 41 teams at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regional held at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. The Red Dragons narrowly missed an automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III Championships next weekend in Mason, Ohio, as the top-two teams qualify.

Cortland scored 128 points, trailing second-place Geneseo by just 13 points. St. Lawrence captured the team title with 63 points. The Red Dragons are eligible to earn a spot at the national meet as one of 16 at-large teams selected from the eight regions. Rounding out the top five were RPI with 151 points and Oneonta with 155 points.

Four Cortland runners earned all-region honors by finishing in the top 35. Senior Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls), last year's individual champion, led the Red Dragons to the finish line with a fifth-place finish after recovering from an early fall, covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:18.4. For Marcantonio, this was his fourth straight all-region accolade. RIT senior Matt Giannino captured the individual title in 25:08.7.

Senior Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) attained all-region honors for the third season in a row, finishing 10th in 25:26.5. Sophomore Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) crossed the finish line in 22nd place (25:47.2), followed closely by senior Joe Ray (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point), who finished 26th in 25:51.1.

Sophomore Alex Hall (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) was Cortland's fifth scorer, finishing 65th in 26:35.1. Freshman Jesse Perrone (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa), who lost a shoe during the race, finished 144th in 27:46.0, while senior Tim Odin (Northport) also competed, leading Hall through the first three miles of the course. Overall, 285 runners competed.

Announcements on at-large selections will be revealed after the weekend.
