UTICA, N.Y. –
Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) scored 16 points and
James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) added 14 points and five rebounds as Cortland improved to 7-0 with a 75-49 win at SUNY Polytechnic. With the win, the Red Dragons are off to their best start since a 7-0 opening to the 1963-64 season and the second-best start ever in school history behind a 9-0 beginning in 1952-53.
Estarfaa made 5-of-8 field goals, 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds and
Shayne Martinez (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) added eight points.
Ryan McCarthy led SUNY Poly (2-5), formerly SUNYIT, with 11 points and Kaleel Johnson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Maverick Hodge chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Cortland slowly built a lead in the first half, turning a 16-12 advantage with 13:23 remaining into a 34-22 halftime edge. Morales scored nine points and Estarfaa seven in the opening period. The Red Dragons led 43-27 early in the second half when a Martinez 3-point play, an Estarfaa 3-pointer and three Estarfaa free throws, after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, increased the lead to 55-30 with 13:54 left. Cortland's lead was at least 22 the rest of the way.
The Red Dragons are off until hosting Medaille in a non-league game on Saturday, January 3, at 2 p.m.
