Miranda Fergus Breaks School 3-Meter Diving Record at Hamilton Invitational

Miranda Fergus broke a 25-year-old school record in 3-meter diving and set a Hamilton pool record on the 1-meter board
CLINTON, N.Y. – Junior Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) broke a 25-year-old school record in 3-meter diving and set a Hamilton pool record in 1-meter diving to win both events at the two-day Hamilton College Women's Swimming and Diving Invitational.

Cortland finished third out of five schools in the final team standings with 806 points, 15 behind second-place Oneonta. Hamilton won the title with 1,131 points. Colby (419) and Potsdam (405) rounded out the field.

Fergus posted a winning 6-dive score of 291.10 points on the 3-meter board to break the previous 6-dive 3-meter school record of 286.75 points set by Laura Landry in 1989. Fergus also won the 1-meter board with a score of 269.50 points to set a Hamilton pool record.

Junior Chelsey Simon (Oneida) won two individual events. She captured the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.09) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.97). She was also fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.39.

Senior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) was runner-up in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.62) and 1,650-yard freestyle (18:43.82), while sophomore Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.27).

Sophomore Angelica Ford (Chicago, IL/Elk Grove Village) finished third in two events – the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.07) and 400-yard individual medley (4:57.09). Junior Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) registered a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (26.13).

Cortland finished third in three different relays and fourth in another. Grossman, junior Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point), Simon and Cornetta were third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:56.92, only 0.52 seconds off the winning time. Simon, Caputo, Grossman and Cornetta placed third in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:22.29) and senior Lauren Kaplowitz (Stamford, CT/Westhill), Grossman, sophomore Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and Cornetta were third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.15). In addition, Cornetta, Kaplowitz, McGurk and Simon finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:52.45).

Cortland returns to action on Saturday, January 10, at 1 p.m. with a dual meet at Hartwick College.
