Jumpers and Sprinters Among Top Cortland Performers at Cornell Kane Invite

Melique Garcia won the 60-meter dash and placed fourth in the 200-meter dash
ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Andre Green (Watertown/Indian River) and senior Melique Garcia (Watervliet) won events and junior Glen Forsythe (Uniondale) posted one of the nation's top triple jumps of the season as part of two runner-up finishes to highlight Cortland's efforts at the Cornell Kane Invitational men's indoor track and field meet.

Green and Forsythe finished first and second, respectively, out of 27 in the long jump with ECAC-qualifying distances. Green covered 6.98 meters (22' 11") to edge out Forsythe, who recorded a leap of 6.96 meters (22' 10"). As of Saturday evening, Green and Forsythe rank 12th and 14th nationally, respectively, in the event. Forsythe also placed second in the triple jump out of 19 competitors at 14.65 meters (48' 0.75"), and ECAC distance that ranks second nationally in Div. III, to date.

Garcia won the 60-meter dash in a field of 32 sprinters with a time of 7.05 seconds (7.00 in prelims). He also finished fourth of 35 in the 200-meter dash in 22.79 seconds. Both times are ECAC qualifiers. Garcia was one of three Red Dragons to hit ECAC marks in the 200 meters. Sophomore Jerel Williams (East Islip) finished sixth in 22.87 seconds, while sophomore Keewan Rondinello's (Liverpool) sixth-place time of 23.19 seconds converts to an ECAC qualifier when changing to a banked-track time.

Junior Steven Pungello (Washingtonville) finished third in the 5,000 meters in 15:22.08 and junior Nick Avossa (Kingston) was third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.53, 8.51 in prelims), both with ECAC-qualifying times. Junior Zach Zieniewicz (Seaford) also qualified for ECACs in the 60-meter hurdles with his seventh-place time of 8.64 seconds.

In the mile run, senior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished eighth (4:21.87) and junior Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) was ninth (4:23.67) out of 41 runners. Both met ECAC qualifying standards. The 4x400-meter relay team of Rondinello, junior Eric Wong (Massapequa Park/Massapequa), freshman Bailey Imbo (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) and Williams also qualified for ECACs with their runner-up time of 3:26.38.

Senior Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) placed fourth of 20 in the weight throw (15.25 meters – 50' 0.5") and junior Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was fourth in the pole vault (4.50 meters – 14' 9").
