Jack Jakubek swam the breaststroke leg of Cortland's school record-setting 400-yard medley relay
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman
Dylan Burns (Cornwall), sophomore
Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), sophomore
Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) and sophomore
Reeve Callen (Oswego) set a school record with its second-place time of 3:26.57 during the first complete day of competition at the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland is in the third place in the team standings. Geneseo leads with 226 points, followed by Fredonia (195), Cortland (143), Oneonta (127) and Oswego (102) in the top five of the nine-team field. The competition continues on Friday and Saturday at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College.
The 400-yard medley relay team broke the school record of 3:28.43 set by
Ben Strickland,
Dan MacQuarrie, Hasbrouck and Callen last year. Geneseo won the race in 3:25.77, eight tenths of a second ahead of the Red Dragons. Burns swam the opening backstroke 100 yards in 53.46 seconds. Jakubek recorded a time of 56.29 seconds in the breaststroke, followed by Hasbrouck's time of 51.45 seconds in the butterfly and Callen's 45.37 seconds in the freestyle.
Senior
Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.86. All individual champions at the meet earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors. Second-place and third-place individual finishers are awarded second-team all-league status.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of freshman
Adam Opsahl (East Lyme, CT), Callen, Burns and Hanifin finished third in 1:25.47. Callen was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.78, 4:40.35 in prelims), Opsahl placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.25, 1:58.54 in prelims), and Hasbrouck was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.60, 1:58.64 in prelims).
Other scorers for Cortland during the first day included: Burns in 10th place in the 50-yard freestyle (21.66); sophomore
Lee Wade (Holtsville/Sachem East) in 11th place in 1-meter diving (392.75 points); junior
Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) in 13th place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.55); and Jakubek in 13th place in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.56).
