Sophomore Reeve Callen won the SUNYAC 200-yard freestyle title for the second straight year
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore
Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) set a new conference record in the 100-yard breaststroke and sophomore
Reeve Callen (Oswego) won the 200-yard freestyle as Cortland moved into second place after the second day of the SUNYAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Geneseo leads the race for the team title with 539 points with one day remaining in the championship at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center. Cortland took over second place with 344 points, followed closely by Oneonta (325) and Fredonia (313) in the nine-team field.
Jakubek broke SUNYAC, meet and school records and hit an NCAA "B" cut with his preliminary time of 56.73 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke. He won in the finals with a time of 57.08 seconds. The previous SUNYAC and meet record was 57.10 seconds by Geneseo's CJ Schaub in 2011, and the old school record was 57.72 seconds by Danny Salvatore in 2012.
Callen won the 200-yard freestyle for the second straight year. He recorded a time of 1:41.60 in the finals. Callen was also part of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished in 6:57.07. Junior
Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) led off the relay, followed by Callen, senior
Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) and sophomore
Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz). Callen and Hanifin were also on Cortland's winning 800-yard freestyle relay team last year.
Hanifin placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.65) and freshman
Adam Opsahl (East Lyme, CT) was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.55, 59.25 in prelims). Freshman
Dylan Burns (Cornwall) finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (53.69).
Two Red Dragons won "B" finals for ninth-place finishes – Hasbrouck in the 100-yard butterfly (52.78, 52.57 in prelims) and junior
Esteban Rodriguez (Hartsdale/Woodlands) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.85).
Freshman
Jamie Miller (Eden) and freshman
Ben Davis (Suffern) each scored points in two events. Miller was 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.90) and 14th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.85), while Davis finished 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (57.06) and 15th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.21). In addition, Spatzer placed 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.18) and senior
Greg MacDonald (Monroe, NJ/St. Joseph's) was 15th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.87).
