Red Dragon Men Compete at Cornell Deneault Invitational

Rob Schenke ran a leg on Cortland's 4x400-meter relay team that finished third with an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:28.66
ITHACA, N.Y. – Melique Garcia (Watervliet) won the 60-meter dash and was one of seven Cortland ECAC qualifiers at the Cornell University Deneault Invitational men's indoor track and field meet.

Garcia beat 27 other sprinters in the 60 meters with a time of 6.82 seconds that currently ranks fourth nationally in Div. III. Junior Andre Green (Watertown/Indian River) placed fifth of 26 in the long jump with an ECAC distance of 7.07 meters (23' 2.5") that is presently 13th nationally.

Senior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished fourth in the 5,000 meters in 14:52.21 and sophomore Jerel Williams (East Islip) was sixth in the 60-meter dash in 7.09 seconds. Senior Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished fifth in the weight throw at 15.93 meters (52' 3.25") and junior Nick Avossa (Kingston) was 12th of 34 in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.53 seconds.

Cortland's other ECAC qualifying effort came in the 4x400-meter relay as freshman Bailey Imbo (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point), freshman Charlie Beeler (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), junior Rob Schenke (Kings Park) and junior Eric Wong (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) finished third in 3:28.66.

Sophomore Keewan Rondinello (Liverpool), Williams and Wong finishing second (35.80), fourth (36.33) and sixth (37.10), respectively, in the 300-meter dash. Senior Tom Calandra (Amherst/Williamsville North) cleared 4.35 meters (14' 3.25") and senior Besnik Palushi (Pine Plains) cleared 4.20 meters (13' 9.25") to finish seventh and eighth, respectively, in the pole vault.

Sophomore Joe Moschitto (Briarcliff Manor/Briarcliff) and freshman Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) placed 10th (1:10.29) and 11th (1:10.33), respectively, in the 500 meters. Junior Jon Granger (Ticonderoga) finished 10th in the long jump (6.69 meters – 21' 11.5"), Prendergast was 10th in the shot put (13.37 meters – 43' 10.5"), sophomore Darrius Samples (Islandia/Hauppauge) finished 11th of 39 in the 200-meter dash (23.39), and Imbo was 11th of 38 in the 800 meters (2:01.02).

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday, March 1, at Brockport. The Red Dragons have been conference runners-up each of the last two seasons.
