Cortland Women's Swimming and Diving SUNYAC Runner-up for Second Straight Season

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland finished as the team runner-up for the second straight year as the Red Dragons concluded competition at the SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Erie Community College's Flickinger Center.

Cortland scored 573 points for its ninth top-three SUNYAC showing in the last 11 years. Geneseo won its seventh straight league title with 880 points, followed by Cortland, New Paltz (472), Oneonta (409) and Fredonia (404.5) in the top five of the nine-school field.

Senior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut time of 52.12 seconds. Freshman Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL) placed third in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.11. Individual champions at the meet earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors. Second-place and third-place individual finishers are awarded second-team all-league status.

Sophomore Chelsey Simon (Oneida) was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:11.61 (2:10.94 in prelims) and sophomore Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) finished fourth in 1-meter diving with 422.95 points. Junior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) placed fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:12.19) and junior Michaela Auer (Oswego) touched the wall sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.75).

Also earning top-eight finishes were sophomore Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) with an eighth-place time of 55.03 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle (54.72 in prelims) and senior Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) with an eighth-place score of 352.80 points in 1-meter diving. Senior Caitlin Lanigan (West Seneca/West Seneca West) won the "B" final in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.23 seconds to finish ninth overall.

The Red Dragons posted six other scoring finishes: freshman Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) in 11th place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.44); freshman Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) in 11th place in the 100-yard freestyle (55.31, 55.19 in prelims); senior M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) in 12th place in the 100-yard freestyle (55.59, 55.15 in prelims); freshman Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) in 13th place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.31, 2:33.36 in prelims); senior Francesca Davide (Ossining) in 13th place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.96); and sophomore Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point) in 14th place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.06).

Cortland wrapped up the evening with a third-place finish by Cornetta, Caputo, Lanigan and Culmo in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.95).
