Cortland Loses at Oswego, 69-57, in SUNYAC Quarterfinals

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Daniel Ross scored 24 points and Keith Tyson tallied 13 of his 15 points in the second half as Oswego pulled away to defeat Cortland, 69-57, in the SUNYAC quarterfinals.

Oswego (17-9) will face top-seeded Brockport in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m. at Brockport. Cortland finishes the season 14-12 with the loss.

Senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) led Cortland with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. He made 7-of-11 shots from the floor. Sophomore T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) scored 13 points and junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) added 12 points.

Ross finished with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals in addition to his 24 points. Tyson totaled seven rebounds, Kyle Covley scored 12 points and Rashawn Powell contributed nine rebounds and four steals to the winning cause.

Cortland shot 56 percent in the first half, but only 32 percent in the second half and 44 percent for the game. The Red Dragons led 27-20 with 7:07 left before halftime on a McMahon jumper, but the Lakers rallied and took a 34-33 lead into the locker room.

The Red Dragons took their final lead at 35-34 on a McMahon basket 21 seconds into the second half. Cortland trailed by two with 15:57 left, but a Ross 3-pointer and a layup and 3-pointer by Tyson gave Oswego a 51-41 lead with 11:43 left.

Cortland pulled to within six on layups by Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) and McMahon, but Oswego opened up a 10-point lead at 58-48 with 7:07 left on a Matt Crockett 3-pointer. Cortland trailed by eight, 60-52, with 3:55 remaining after a pair of Hefele free throws, but the Lakers put the game out of reach with a 9-0 run that featured six points from Tyson. Oswego shot 50 percent in the second half and 47 percent for the game. The Lakers held a 15-6 advantage in points from the foul line. They made 15-of-17 free throws to Cortland's 6-of-13 shooting.
