Red Dragons Win at Fredonia, 152-147, to Finish Dual Season with 10-3 Mark

Chelsey Simon won the 200-yard butterfly and 1,000-yard freestyle
FREDONIA, N.Y. – Sophomore Chelsey Simon (Oneida) and senior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) each won two individual events as Cortland concluded its dual-meet season with a 152-147 victory at Fredonia. The Red Dragons finished with a 10-3 record in dual scoring after opening the year 0-3.

Cortland led 146-136 entering the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, and clinched the dual victory with a second-place finish by junior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis), senior Caitlin Lanigan (West Seneca/West Seneca West), junior Michaela Auer (Oswego) and Culmo in 1:43.42.

Simon won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:11.12) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.88), while Culmo won the 50-yard freestyle (24.93) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.07). Simon also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.35).

Sophomore Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) was the 100-yard butterfly winner (1:00.34) and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.91). Senior Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.56) and was runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.31).

Cortland opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as freshman Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL), Auer, Hickey and Culmo turned in a time of 1:53.39.

Ford posted second-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.00) and 200-yard backstroke (2:16.45). Auer was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.80), senior Francesca Davide (Ossining) finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.61) and senior M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) was runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle (25.80). Also for the Red Dragons, Caputo finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.70) and sophomore Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) was second in 1-meter diving (244.30 points).

The Red Dragons return to action at the SUNYAC Championship Meet Feb. 19-22 at Erie Community College's Flickinger Center in Buffalo.
