Cortland Women Win Third Consecutive SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Title

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland women's indoor track and field team won its third straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and 17th overall at the conference's indoor championships. The meet was held at Brockport's Special Events and Recreation Center.

Cortland claimed the crown with 130 points, followed by Buffalo State (114), Geneseo (105) and Oneonta (93) in the top half of the eight-team field.

(UPDATE: 3/4/14:  Cortland head coach Steve Patrick was voted as the 2014 SUNYAC Women's Indoor Track and FIeld Coach of the Year. He earned the award three times previously in 2013, 2012 and 2008.)

Three Red Dragons won individual league titles. Sophomore Angelique Jean-Charles (Elmont/Valley Stream) set a school record in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 9.08 seconds. The previous mark of 9.09 seconds was established by Christina Acquaviva in 2007. Jean-Charles won the finals in 9.23 seconds.

Junior Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) set a meet record in the shot put with her winning distance of 13.06 meters (42' 10.25"). Senior Kelly Hugo (Highland) repeated as SUNYAC indoor champion in the pole vault by clearing 3.45 meters (11' 3.75"). She was one of two competitors to register that height and was declared the winner based on fewer misses. Hugo also placed seventh in the long jump at 5.30 meters (17' 4.75").

Cortland also finished first in the distance medley relay as the combination of sophomore Kerri Culhane (Sayville), freshman Kelly Paris (Amsterdam), sophomore Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) and sophomore Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) established a new meet record of 12:33.93.

Senior Lisa Bodratti (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles behind Jean-Charles in 9.24 seconds. The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference.

Cortland's 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Dana Kupiec (Salem), junior Gabrielle Conant (Tully), junior Kiersten Duroe (Horseheads) and senior Africa Harper (Bronx/John F. Kennedy) finished second in 4:00.33. Buffalo State won the race in 3:58.35. Both the Bengals' and Red Dragons' times were faster than the previous meet and facility records.

Junior Taylor Hudson (Victor) tied for third place in the high jump at 1.60 meters (5' 3"), was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.29) and finished fifth in the long jump (5.38 meters – 17' 8"). Balzano was third in the 800 meters (2:20.38) and Blomback placed third in the mile (5:09.32).

Senior Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) finished third in the long jump (5.43 meters – 17' 9.75") and fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.99). Her long jump matched the distance of the second-place finisher, but Bonnell finished third due to a shorter second-best jump.

Freshman Amanda Moore (Massapequa) was fourth in both the 60-meter dash (7.90) and 200-meter dash (26.16). Culhane finished fifth in the mile (5:13.11), sophomore Carla Auguste (Brooklyn/Midwood) was fifth in the triple jump (10.98 meters – 36' 0.25") and sophomore Alex Seymour (Dryden) tied for fifth in the pole vault (3.15 meters – 10' 4").

Freshman Diamond Jackson (Farmingville/Sachem East) placed sixth in the shot put (11.25 meters – 36' 11"). Kupiec finished seventh in the 200-meter dash (26.31) and eighth in the 60-meter dash (8.08, 8.01 in prelims).

Sophomore Jane Martinez (Latham/East Lyme (CT)) finished seventh in the pole vault at 3.00 meters (9' 10"). She was one of five vaulters, including teammates Heather Eriksson (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and Mackenzie Meehan (Amsterdam), to finish at that height. Martinez finished seventh alone due to fewer misses. Eriksson and Meehan tied for ninth place.

Also scoring for Cortland with top-eight placements were junior Ameena Dye (DeWitt/Jamesville-DeWitt) with an eighth-place time of 18:17.87 in the 5,000 meters and sophomore Kayla Koelbel (Bradford, PA/Kings Park (NY)) in eighth place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.78, 9.63 in prelims).
