AUBURNDALE, FLA. – Cortland scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a tight game and the nationally eighth-ranked Red Dragons defeated Penn St. Abington, 15-0, in a game at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
The Red Dragons improved to 8-2 with their third straight win. Abington dropped to 1-5 with the loss.
Cortland outhit the Lions, 20-3, with five players registering multiple hits.
Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk) went 3-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored and
P.J. Rinaldi was 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and two runs scored.
Mark DeMilio (Valhalla) and
Donny Castaldo (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) were each 2-for-3 with two RBI and
Mathew Wild (Auburn) came off the bench to go 2-for-2.
Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) reached base three times on two walks and a double.
Zach Ferris (Stephentown/LaSalle Institute) and four Cortland relievers combined on a three-hit shutout. Ferris, who earned the win since the pitching situation was pre-arranged, gave up two hits and a walk and struck out three in four innings.
Ryan McAlary (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) entered with a runner on in the fifth and got a double-play grounder and a groundout.
Travis Laitar (Fergus, ON/Centre Wellington) pitched two innings and gave up one hit and three walks and fanned two.
Pat Bronson (Waverly) walked one and struck out one in the eighth and
Tyler Brien (Ilion) allowed only a runner on an error and struck out one in the ninth.
Abington was led by Diego Melendez, who finished 1-for-1 with two walks. Mike Scaringelli and Trey Guaglionona were each 1-for-3.
Cortland scored in the first on a
Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) fielder's choice grounder and in the fourth when
Mitch Hollander (Woodbury/Syosset) doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a DeMilio RBI groundout.
The Red Dragons sent 14 batters to the plate in their 10-run fifth. Bomasuto had two singles, one to drive in a run, and Rinaldi registered a single and a three-run homer during the inning. Other highlights in the frame included a Iacomini RBi double, a DeMilio RBI single, a Castaldo two-run triple and a
Conrad Ziemendorf (Penfield/Webster Schroeder) run-scoring single.
Cortland's final three runs crossed in the sixth on an error, a wild pitch and a
Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) RBI single.
Cortland is off Wednesday and will play nationally ranked teams the following two days with games versus Wheaton (Mass.) Thursday and 2013 national runner-up Southern Maine Friday, both in Auburndale.
