Cortland Shuts Out New Paltz, 5-0, to Finish Weekend Three-Game Sweep

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Brandon Serio (Bedford Hills/Fox Lane) and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as Cortland, ranked eighth nationally in Div. III, completed a three-game weekend sweep of New Paltz, 5-0, in SUNYAC action.

The Red Dragons are now 13-4 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the Hawks fell to 8-11 and 0-3.

Serio, who improved to 4-2, gave up only two hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out five batters. Senior Steve Komanecky (Auburn) started the eighth and allowed a walk and a hit. Junior Garrett Hoag (Dansville) took over with two outs, and the first batter he faced reached on an error to load the bases. He escaped the jam, however, when first baseman Austin Clock (Niskayuna) made a running, sliding catch on a fly ball down the right field line in foul territory to end the inning. Hoag gave up one hit and struck out a batter in the ninth.

Cortland grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Donny Castaldo (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk) RBI groundout. Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) reached second on a dropped liner to center, went to third on a P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, CT) single and scored on a Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) sacrifice fly to center.

Castaldo was hit by a pitch with two outs in the second and scored on a Bomasuto triple to deep center. The Red Dragons extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Tim Panetta (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) reached on an error and Bomasuto drew a one-out walk. Bomasuto was forced out at second on a Iacomini grounder to the short, but the throw by the second baseman to first was wild and Panetta scored.

The Red Dragons scored their final run in the seventh. Bomasuto doubled with one out, Iacomini reached on an error and Rinaldi singled to load the bases. Pinch hitter Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) drew a walk to force in a run.

Bomasuto finished 2-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBI and Rinaldi was 2-for-4. Castaldo went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored and was hit by a pitch.

David Lostaglio was 3-for-4 to account for all but one of New Paltz's four hits. Luke Schuessler, the first of six pitchers for the Hawks, suffered the loss after giving up three hits and three runs, two earned, in an inning and two thirds.
