UNIONDALE, NY. – The nationally second-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team out scored Stevens Institute, 8-3, in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and earn a 10-5 victory Saturday afternoon at the Mitchel Stadium Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. The Red Dragons improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Ducks fell to 1-3.
Senior
Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) led the Cortland offense with three goals. Junior
Benjamin Dunlavey (Elmira/Corning East) provided two goals and one assist, all in the second half, and senior
Nate Garbarino (Binghamton) recorded one goal and one assist. Seniors
Doug Meehan (Sayville) and
Mike Cummings (Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and juniors
Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) and
Patrick Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) each netted a goal. Sophomore
Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) registered three assists, freshman
Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) contributed two assists and senior
Tyler Chin (Hauppauge) and junior
Luke McNaney (Marcellus) picked up one assist apiece.

Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) stopped nine shots for the Red Dragons, including four in the fourth quarter. Sophomore
Pat Baldwin (Alpharetta, GA) won 11-of-18 faceoffs and collected a team-high five ground balls. Senior
Stephen Burke (Yorktown) registered four ground balls, while 12 different players contributed to the team's 15 caused turnovers.
Michael Maroon recorded a goal and an assist for Stevens. Charlie Cronin, Matt Ferentini, Tim Fair and Connor Towne each tallied a goal. Goalie Kevin Rafferty made 13 saves and registered four ground balls. Fair and Tim Culloty scooped up five ground balls apiece.
Stevens grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal from Fair at nine minutes, three seconds and a man-up score by Cronin at 5:29. Slavik put Cortland on the scoreboard with his first of the game at 2:04 of the first. Rakoczy netted the only goal of the second quarter off a feed from Hopps at the midway point and the teams headed to halftime tied at 2-2.
The Red Dragons built a cushion with a four-goal outburst in the first 4:26 of the third quarter for a 6-2 advantage. Meehan scored at 12:23, and Brown, a long-stick midfielder, netted his fourth goal of the season just 11 seconds later. Dunlavey then scored his first of the game at 11:38, and Slavik finished the run with his second of the contest at 10:34. Maroon ended the Red Dragons' streak at 8:19, but Cummings made it a 7-3 score heading into the fourth quarter with his goal at 6:22.
Dunlavey opened the final quarter with his second goal of the game and fifth of the season off Hopps' third assist at 11:09. Towne answered at 10:38, but just over two minutes later, Slavik buried his third goal of the game and Cortland led 9-4. Ferentini netted a man-up goal for the Ducks at 6:14 to make it a 9-5 game. Garbarino concluded the scoring with his team-high eighth goal of the season at the 2:14 mark for the final of 10-5.
