Cortland Strikes Early in Game 2 to Earn Doubleheader Split vs. Geneseo

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI as Cortland defeated Geneseo, 5-3, to earn a split of a SUNYAC doubleheader with the visiting Knights.

Geneseo won the opener, 2-0, with the game's lone runs coming on a first-inning, two-run homer by Sam Trapasso. Cortland is now 14-12 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC. Geneseo is 6-8 and 3-3.

GAME 1: Geneseo 2, Cortland 0 (Box Score)

Geneseo's Mikayla Moore threw a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts for her third win of the season. She did, however, walk five batters, but Cortland left the bases loaded in both the first and second innings and stranded nine runners total.

The Knights scored in the first when Sami Brown drew a one-out walk and Trapasso hit a two-run, opposite-field homer over the right-field fence. With two outs in the inning, Elise Porreca singled and Alyssa Presutti hit a double down the left field line. Porreca tried to score from first but was easily thrown out on a relay from left fielder Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) to shortstop Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) to catcher Briana Barca (Eastchester).

Cortland starter Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) allowed only one hit over the next three innings after Geneseo's three-hit first. She struck out three and walked one. Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) allowed only one hit and one walk and fanned two batters in three scoreless innings of relief.

Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) finished 2-for-3 with a walk and Courtney Kadish (East Amherst/Williamsville North) was 1-for-2 with a walk to lead Cortland. Presutti ended 2-for-3 for the Knights.

GAME 2: Cortland 5, Geneseo 3 (Box Score)

Cortland scored at least once in each of the first four innings on its way to the victory. The run in the first inning snapped both a 19-inning scoreless streak for both the Red Dragons' offense and the Geneseo pitching staff.

Bucci doubled with one out in the first and scored on Kohler's two-out double to right center. Geneseo tied the game in the top of the second on a Presutti solo homer to left.

The Red Dragons grabbed the lead for good when Kadish led off the second with a walk, was bunted to second by Wolstenholme and scored on Devynn Wilder's (Oswego) RBI double to right center. An error on a fielder's choice grounder allowed a run to score in the third, and the Red Dragons added two in the fourth on a Kohler RBI single and a Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) sacrifice bunt. On the bunt, Bianca Trio (Mahopac) broke from third as the third baseman was throwing to first and she beat the return throw to the plate.

Geneseo drew to within 5-3 in the fifth on a Jami Cohen leadoff infield single and a two-out, two-run homer to left by Ashley Fillmore. All five of Geneseo's runs in the doubleheaders resulted from three home runs.

Cortland starter Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) settled down after the Fillmore homer and allowed only two runners the rest of the way on a leadoff single in the sixth and a one-out infield single in the seventh. She evened her record at 5-5 with the complete-game victory after allowing six hits and one walk. She struck out four batters.

Katie Brennan started for Geneseo and allowed five runs, four earned, in three and a third innings. Corrin Spallone kept the Knights in striking distance by throwing two and two-thirds hitless innings with two strikeouts.

In addition to Kohler's 2-for-3 performance, Bucci went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and was a combined 4-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Cortland will host Brockport in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
