Cortland Sweeps Buffalo St., Takes Over Top Spot in SUNYAC Standings

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) allowed one run over five innings in the opener and Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) gave up two runs on three hits in the nightcap as Cortland swept Buffalo State, 5-3, in a SUNYAC doubleheader.

With the wins, Cortland moves into first place in the SUNYAC standings at 9-3 (18-12 overall), a half game ahead of Oneonta (8-3). Buffalo State is now 12-10 overall and 6-4 in the league.

GAME 1: Cortland 5, Buffalo St. 3 (Box Score)

Corrigan earned the win after allowing only one run in five innings of work. She gave up four hits and two walks and struck out four.

Cortland was out-hit in the game, 7-5, but took advantage of two errors by the Bengals to score four unearned runs. The Red Dragons scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed. With two outs, Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) and Alicia Hibbard (Canastota) each walked and Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) reached on an error that allowed Kohler to score. Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) followed with a two-run single to right center.

The lead increased to 4-0 in the top of the fifth when, again with two outs, Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) singled, Kohler walked and Hibbard hit an RBI single through the right side. Buffalo State got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Carly Knight walked, stole second, went to third on a Stephanie Novo single and scored on Kate Brownell's sacrifice fly.

The Bengals had threatened one inning prior when they loaded the bases with one out, but Corrigan escaped the jam with a strikeout and a pop-up.

Cortland went up 5-1 in the sixth on a one-out Courtney Kadish (East Amherst/Williamsville North) double, a wild pitch and a two-out error. Buffalo State made things interesting in the seventh off reliever Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa), who had retired the side in order in the sixth. Joanna Bardak led off with a single, Knight doubled and Shelly Maggard drove in a run with a sac fly. After a flyout for the second out, Brownell doubled to center to drive in Knight and bring the potential tying run to the plate. Flint got the next batter to ground out, however, to end the game.

Knight finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs and Brownell was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Buffalo State. Maddie Coneys allowed five hits, four walks and five runs – one earned – with two strikeouts in five and a third innings. Sam Tilkins did not allow a hit over the final inning and two thirds.

GAME 2: Cortland 5, Buffalo St. 2 (Box Score)

Kohler went 3-for-3 with a homer, double, three runs batted in and two runs scored, and in the process moved into a tie for first place at Cortland in career RBI. Kohler's 139 career RBI matches Carin Piacente (2001-04) and Julie Gentner (2000-03) atop the school's career charts.

Salamone improved to 8-2 after allowing three hits and four walks and striking out two. She did not allow a hit until a leadoff single by Bardak in the fifth.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead right away when Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) led off the game with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a Bucci sacrifice and scored on Kohler's sac fly to left. In the fourth, Bucci opened with a single and, after a wild pitch, Kohler hit a two-run homer to left center for her eighth round-tripper of the season and her school career-tying runs batted in.

The Red Dragons added another run in the fourth on an error, and pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth with a two-out rally that featured consecutive singles from Kohler, Hibbard and Wolstenholme, the latter driving in a run. Wolstenholme finished 2-for-4.

Bardak's single in the fifth led to a run for the Bengals on a first-and-third caught stealing play later in the inning. Novo opened the sixth with a single and eventually scored on a Taylor Swiatek RBI groundout.
