Nick Avossa's prelim time of 14.78 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles broke the school record by a hundredth of a second
CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Nick Avossa (Kingston) set a school record in the 110-meter hurdles and recorded one of his team's 11 ECAC-qualifying performances at the two-day Cortland Classic.
Avossa set the school mark in the 110-meter hurdles prelims on Friday with a time of 14.78 seconds. The previous record was 14.79 seconds by Jon Frechette in 2004. Avossa won the finals Saturday in 15.58 seconds as the sprinters and hurdlers dealt with a headwind on the second day. Avossa's prelim time currently ranks him 13th nationally in Div. III.
Zach Zieniewicz (Seaford) was second in the event at 15.70 seconds, and his prelim time of 15.12 seconds is an ECAC qualifier.
Glen Forsythe (Uniondale) won two field events with ECAC distances. He captured the long jump at 7.23 meters (23' 8.75") and the triple jump at 14.70 meters (48' 2.75"). Forsythe is presently fourth nationally in both events. Also in the long jump,
Andre Green (Watertown/Indian River) was second at 7.12 meters (23' 4.5") and
Jon Granger (Ticonderoga) finished fourth at 6.76 meters (22' 2.25"), both with ECAC efforts. Green ranks 15th nationally with his distance.
Melique Garcia (Watervliet) had the fastest time in the 100-meter dash prelims Friday at 10.67 seconds, an ECAC qualifier and the ninth-best time nationally. He did not run in Saturday's finals.
Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) registered ECAC qualifiers with his second-place discus throw of 44.10 meters (144' 8") and his third-place hammer throw of 49.77 meters (163' 3").
Jerel Williams (East Islip) was an ECAC qualifier in the 400-meter dash with a fifth-place time of 50.01 seconds, and the 4x800-meter relay team of
Charlie Beeler (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius),
Chris Landi (Merrick/Calhoun),
Bailey Imbo (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) and
Tim Odin (Northport) finished first with an ECAC time of 7:58.31.
Other Cortland highlights included wins by Odin in the 800 meters (1:57.06) and
Alex Hall (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:01.17), as well as the 4x400-meter relay team of Garcia, Imbo,
Eric Wong (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) and Williams in 3:24.39.
Tom Calandra (Amherst/Williamsville North) and
Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished first and second, respectively, in the pole vault. Both cleared 4.35 meters, with Calandra winning due to number of misses.
Rob Schenke (Kings Park) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (56.40).
Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) finished second in the decathlon with 5,738 points. During the competition, he was first in the 400 meters (51.87) and long jump (6.60 meters – 21' 8") and second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.11) and shot put (10.84 meters – 35' 6.75").
