ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) threw a two-hit shutout and sophomores
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) and
Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) each homered as Cortland defeated nationally 22nd-ranked Ithaca, 3-0, in the first game of a non-league doubleheader. The Red Dragons completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory in the second game to improve to 11-7 on the season.
GAME 1: Cortland 3, Ithaca 0 (Box Score)Flint, now 4-3, allowed only three baserunners – a one-out single by Monica Capolongo in the second, a two-out single by Francesca Busa in the third and a one-out walk by Kelly Robichaud in the seventh. Capolongo stole second with two outs in the second and was the lone Bomber to reach second base. Flint dominated despite not striking out any batters.
Cork led off the game with a homer to left field to give Cortland a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until the sixth when senior
Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) doubled to left and Stoddard hit a two-run homer down the left field line.
Kohler finished 3-for-3 to account for half of Cortland's six hits. Stoddard went 1-for-2 with two RBI and sophomore
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) was 1-for-3. Ithaca's Sam Bender allowed six hits and a walk and struck out two in a complete-game effort.
GAME 2: Cortland 4, Ithaca 2 (Box Score)Junior
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) improved to 4-0 with the win in the second game. She allowed three hits and three walks and gave up two runs, one earned, in five and two-thirds innings.
Senior
Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) entered in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and runners on first and third and induced a groundout to preserve Cortland's 4-2 lead. She allowed only a two-out walk in the seventh and earned her second save of the spring.
Cortland established a 1-0 lead in the first when Bucci was hit by a pitch, went to second on a passed ball and scored on an
Alicia Hibbard (Canastota) RBI single through the right side. In the third, Hibbard and Kohler drew one-out walks and a Stoddard fielder's choice put runners on first and third with two outs. Stoddard moved to second on a wild pitch and
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) singled up the middle to drive in two runs.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the top of the sixth. Junior
Devynn Wilder (Oswego) singled with two outs. Sophomore
Makaylee Dowd (Saratoga Springs) followed with a single to right, and an error by the right fielder allowed Wilder to score.
Ithaca had only two baserunners through the first five innings before breaking through in the sixth. Jessie Fleck, who finished 2-for-2, singled and moved to second on a groundout. Julianne Vincent walked, and Fleck went to third on a passed ball. Sydney Folk hit an RBI single to right, and an error after the throw home permitted a second run to score. After a groundout and a walk, Corrigan came in to finish the inning.
Hibbard reached base in all four of her plate appearances with two singles and two walks and Wilder finished 2-for-2 with a walk in three times up.
Cortland will resume SUNYAC play with doubleheaders Friday at Oneonta and Saturday at New Paltz.
