Cortland Beaten by Fredonia, 3-1, in SUNYAC Regular-Season Finale

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sean Larson threw a complete-game six-hitter and Mike Prentice broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single in the seventh as Fredonia upset sixth-ranked Cortland, 3-1, in a SUNYAC contest.

The Blue Devils improve to 11-20 and finish with a 6-12 SUNYAC record in what is most likely their final game of the season. Cortland, now 27-8 overall and 15-3 in the SUNYAC, will host Cazenovia in a non-league game Tuesday and will be the top seed and host of the four-team SUNYAC tournament next Friday-Sunday, May 2-4.

Larson struck out six and walked one. He is 4-3 with the win and improved his season ERA to 1.14. Brandon Serio (Bedford Hills/Fox Lane) started for Cortland and allowed eight hits and one run over six and a third innings. He struck out four and walked one. Steve Komanecky (Auburn) allowed the two runs in the seventh and dropped to 1-2 with the loss.

Fredonia out-hit Cortland, 13-6, but left 11 runners on base. Four of the Blue Devils' hits came in the first inning as they took a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Ricky Mendiola singled to center, Kyle Koslowski singled through the left side, Prentice hit a single to right and Bobby Frantz drove in a run with a shallow single down the right-field line.

Cortland tied the game in the second when Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) led off with an infield single, stole second on a strikeout and scored on Chris Jackson's (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) RBI single to center. Cortland had runners on second and third with two outs later in the inning before Larson struck out a batter to end the inning.

Fredonia broke the tie in the seventh. Serio retired the first batter before being replaced by Komanecky. Ciro Frontale singled, but was forced out on a Mendiola fielder's choice for the second out. Koslowski singled to center, and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third before Prentice hit a two-run single up the middle.

Cortland got the leadoff hitter on in the bottom of the eighth when Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) singled, but a lineout double play and a groundout stopped that threat. Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) singled with one out in the ninth before a pair of flyouts ended the game.

Prentice finished 3-for-4, Frontale, Frantz and Kenny Johnston were each 2-for-4, and Koslowski finished 2-for-5 for the Blue Devils. Rosing went 2-for-4 and Jackson was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Cortland.
