ONEONTA, N.Y. –
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) combined on a six-hitter as Cortland opened play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament with a 6-2 win over Buffalo State.
Cortland (26-13), the second seed in the six-team tourney, will face Brockport on Friday at 12:30 p.m. Brockport defeated Geneseo on Thursday. The final game on Thursday between Buffalo State and New Paltz was halted and will be completed Friday at 9 a.m., followed by Oneonta vs. Geneseo at approximately 10:30 a.m. and the Cortland-Brockport game after
Salamone, now 13-2 on the season, allowed six hits, no walks and two runs in five and a third innings. Corrigan entered in the top of the sixth with Buffalo State runners on second and third and one out and Cortland clinging to a 3-1 lead. She gave up an RBI groundout to Sarah Gorski and got the next hitter to ground out to end the inning. Corrigan then retired the side in order with a strikeout and two groundouts in the seventh for her third save of the season.
Cortland finished with 10 hits, led by
Courtney Kadish (East Amherst/Williamsville North) who went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) was 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored.
Shelly Maggard went 2-for-3 and Gorski and Jean Stahl were each 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Bengals. Maddie Coneys allowed nine hits and five runs, three earned, over five and a third innings. She struck out five and walked two.
Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) singled in a run for Cortland in the top of the first, but Stahl tied the game in the second with a two-out RBI single. The Red Dragons grabbed the lead for good on a Phillips run-scoring single down the left-field line – her first RBI of the season. Phillips scored later in the inning on the continuation of a play after Bucci hit into a fielder's choice that resulted in an out at home.
Cortland had a couple of chances to extend its lead, but the Red Dragons left runners on first and third in the fifth and had a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score on an
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) double in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Buffalo State's Joanna Bardak singled with one out and Kate Brownell doubled. That led to the second-and-third situation that prompted the entry of Corrigan as a reliever.
Cortland added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) hit an RBI infield single, and an error on the play allowed a second run two score. Bucci scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
