GENESEO, N.Y. – Cortland claimed five individual league titles on its way to a second-place team finish at the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Oneonta won the league crown with 173 points, followed by Cortland close behind with 163.5 points. Brockport placed third (134), followed by Buffalo State (129), host Geneseo (91.5), Oswego (56), Fredonia (51) and Plattsburgh (19).
Glen Forsythe (Uniondale) set a facility record with his winning triple jump of 14.62 meters (47' 11.75").
Melique Garcia (Watervliet) won the 100-meter dash in 10.71 seconds and
Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) took top honors in the 10,000-meter run in 31:46.89.
Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) won the pole vault by clearing 4.65 meters (15' 3"), while
Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) won the decathlon with a score of 5,850 points. He scored 770 points in the 110-meter hurdles (15.67), 757 points in the 100-meter dash (11.48) and 716 points in the 400-meter dash (52.21).
The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference. Earning second-team honors with runner-up showings were:
Jerel Williams (East Islip) in the 400-meter dash (49.78);
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) in the 5,000 meters (15:15.30);
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:31.65); and
Woody Millar (Saratoga Springs) in the javelin throw (50.85 meters – 166' 10").
Garcia finished third in the 200-meter dash in 21.42 seconds, which currently ranks ninth nationally in Div. III.
Cortland will compete at the ECAC Div. III Outdoor Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 15-16, at RPI, and the NCAA Div. III Championships are May 22-24 at Ohio Wesleyan University.
