GENESEO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's outdoor track and field team won its fourth straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and its 17th overall at the league's championship meet Friday and Saturday at SUNY Geneseo.
Cortland won with a score of 168 points, followed by Buffalo State (120), Brockport (116), Oneonta (110) and Geneseo (107) in a tight pack from second to fifth place. Rounding out the field were Fredonia (83), Plattsburgh (72) and Oswego (41).
Cortland's 4x100-meter relay of
Amanda Moore (Massapequa),
Dana Kupiec (Salem),
Africa Harper (Bronx/John F. Kennedy) and
Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) set a school and facility record with its winning time of 47.86 seconds. The previous school record of 47.90 seconds was established by Stephanie Bailey, Kerri Gannon, Crystal Hirsch and Kissie Pringle in 2002. Cortland missed the meet record by eight hundredths of a second. The time currently ranks 11th nationally in Div. III. Bonnell was part of the league champion 4x100-meter relay team as a sophomore in 2012.
The Red Dragons garnered five individual league titles, led by
Taylor Hudson's (Victor) wins in the high jump and long jump. Hudson broke her own meet record in the high jump with a height of 1.68 meters (5' 6"), which is also a facility record, and she broke the facility record in the long jump with her winning distance of 5.66 meters (18' 7"). Hudson repeated as league champion in the high jump.
Lisa Bodratti (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.89 seconds.
Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) captured the shot put title at 12.37 meters (40' 7") and
Kayla Koelbel (Bradford, PA/Kings Park (NY)) won the heptathlon with a score of 3,805 points. In the heptathlon, Koelbel won the 200-meter dash (26.99) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.01), each for 713 points.
The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference. Earning second-team honors with runner-up showings were:
Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) in the 800 meters (2:15.78);
Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) in the 1,500 meters (4:40.87); Bonnell in the long jump (5.37 meters – 17' 7.5"); and Hudson in the javelin throw (32.78 meters – 107' 6"). Bonnell finished behind teammate Hudson in the long jump after winning the league title in the event in 2012 and 2013.
Hudson finished as the top scorer in the meet with 32 points, including 28 points in field events. Vancol was the fourth-leading field event scorer with 15 points.
