CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team finished 3-1 at its own Red Dragon Classic after splitting two matches during the second day of competition. The Red Dragons lost in five sets to Lebanon Valley and beat Rochester in three sets.
Juniata and Hiram each finished with 4-0 records. Juniata repeated as tournament champion based on a fewest sets played tiebreaker (12 sets for Juniata versus 13 for Hiram). Cortland was one of three schools, along with Lebanon Valley and Richard Stockton, to finish with 3-1 records in the 11-team field.
Cortland won the first set versus Lebanon Valley, 25-18, but the Dutchmen won the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-18. The Red Dragons stayed alive with a 26-24 win in the fourth set, but fell 15-10 in the fifth.
Senior
Mary Kelly (Guilderland), who was named to the all-tournament team, led Cortland with 18 kills and three blocks. Sophomore
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) totaled 11 kills and 11 digs and junior
Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) finished with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore
Victoria Grix (Pearl River) led the team with 17 digs, while sophomore
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) finished with 47 assists and five digs.
The Red Dragons wrapped the tournament with a 25-14, 25-12, 25-16 sweep of Rochester. Hayward registered seven kills and six digs, Czeczotka had six kills, six digs and three blocks, and junior
Kayla Pollock (Massapequa) added six kills and four digs.
Roberts distributed 38 assists and notched 10 digs. Sophomore
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led the squad with 11 digs and freshman
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) finished with five kills and two blocks. Kelly paced the team with three blocks.
Cortland will play matches against Brooklyn College and Vassar College on Monday, Sept. 1, at Vassar starting at 1 p.m.
