Cortland Men Eighth at Penn State Race

Steven Pungello covered the 5.2-mile course in 27:40 to finish 71st overall
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – Cortland finished eighth as one of only three Division III schools at the 11-team Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Men's Cross Country Invitational, hosted by Penn State University.

The Red Dragons, ranked 19th nationally in Division III, finished with 227 points. Penn State won with 41 points, followed by Syracuse (47), Georgetown (48), St. Joseph's (Pa.) (126) and Pittsburgh (136).

Senior Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) finished 42nd out of 133 runners on the 5.2-mile course in 27 minutes, five seconds. Senior Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) was 45th in 27:10 and senior Joe Ray (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) placed 59th in 27:29.

Rounding out the Cortland top seven were: senior Steven Pungello (Washingtonville) in 71st place (27:40); sophomore Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) in 86th place (28:04); sophomore Alex Hall (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) in 99th place (28:31); and sophomore Gabe Rodriguez (Geneseo) in 109th place (29:00). Matt Fischer of Penn State won the race in 26:12.

Cortland will compete at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m.
