Red Dragons Earn 78-64 League Victory at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 17 points and registered five assists and three steals and senior Matt McGowan (Lake George) matched his career high with 13 points and added a team-high five rebounds as Cortland defeated host Potsdam, 78-64.

The Red Dragons snapped a three-game losing streak and are now 9-3 overall and 3-3 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam dropped to 2-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Herron made 6-of-9 shots, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. McGowan went 4-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the foul line.

Sophomore Michael Kelly (Monroe/Burke Catholic) connected on 3-of-5 of his 3-pointers for a career-high nine points in 13 minutes off the bench. Freshman Justin Prendergast (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored eight points on 3-of-3 shooting and junior Grequan Carter (Queens/Humanities & The Arts) finished with seven points  and four rebounds.

Rishawd Hendricks paced Potsdam with 18 points. He made all three of his 3-point shots and 7-of-11 overall from the floor. Nick Smith was 4-for-4 from long distance for 12 points, while Greg Torchon and Joe Estramonte scored nine points apiece. Estramonte led the Bears with four assists.

Cortland never trailed in the contest, leading by as much as 11 in the first half before settling for a 41-34 halftime lead. The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 15 at 12:02 remaining on a Kelly trey, but Potsdam fought back to within 60-51 with 9:02 left on a Conor Engle layup.

Cortland, however, put the game away with a 16-0 run over the next five-plus minutes. Eight of those points came from the foul line, four by James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane). Potsdam outscored Cortland 13-3 over the final 3:51 to create the final margin.

Cortland continues its North Country trip with a SUNYAC game at Plattsburgh Saturday at 2 p.m.
