Cortland Men Finish Third at RPI Kumpf Invitational

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) won the 500-yard freestyle to lead the Cortland men's swimming and diving team during its third-place finish at the RPI Kumpf Invitational.
 
Ithaca won the team title with 427 points, followed by RPI (418), Cortland (279), Clarkson (175), Skidmore (97) and Cobleskill (49). In the dual scoring for the meet, Cortland finished 3-2 with wins over Clarkson, Skidmore and Cobleskill.
 
Hanifin captured the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.04, more than three seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Junior Reeve Callen (Oswego) placed second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.22) and 100-yard freestyle (48.80), and senior Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:24.86) and eighth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.19).
 
Senior Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) earned third-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.44) and 100-yard freestyle (49.20). Senior Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.37) and eighth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:51.46).
 
Also for the Red Dragons, sophomore Dylan Burns (Cornwall) was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.62), freshman Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.76) and freshman Luke Rutigliano (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) was sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.42). Freshman Jason Rivera (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) finished fourth in 1-meter diving (184.45 points) and fifth in 3-meter diving (176.40 points).
 
Burns, junior Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), Spatzer and Hanifin finished second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:38.64). Cortland took two of the top five spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Burns, Hanifin, Strothenke and Callen finished second (3:13.12) and Cremer, freshman Zachary Healy (Orchard Park), Rutligliano and sophomore Jamie Miller (Eden) placed fifth (3:27.71).
 
Cortland will compete in a dual meet at Oswego on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
