Alex Spatzer won the 200-yard freestyle and swam a leg on Cortland's winning 200-yard medley relay team
OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team won the final event to defeat host Oswego, 119-117, in dual-meet action.
The Red Dragons trailed 111-108 before freshman
Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point), senior
Luke Strothenke (New Paltz), junior
Reeve Callen (Oswego) and sophomore
Dylan Burns (Cornwall) swam the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.80 to edge the Lakers by less than four tenths of a second. Cortland earned 11 points for the victory, with Oswego taking second and third for a combined six points.
Callen won both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:15.35) and 500-yard freestyle (4:57.65), and senior
Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) took top honors in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.89) and 100-yard freestyle (48.41). Cortland's other individual event winners were Burns in the 100-yard backstroke (54.79) and senior
Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.98).
Cortland opened the meet with a win by Strothenke, freshman
Brendin Thompson (Pine Bush), Spatzer and Hanifin in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.73). In addition, Burns placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.40), Strothenke was second in the 100-yard butterfly (55.20), Thompson finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.27) and senior
Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.09).
Cortland returns to action in a little more than a week when the Red Dragons host Oneonta on Saturday, January 31, at 1 p.m.
