Cortland Ties Fredonia, 3-3, on Broderick Goal With 12 Seconds Left in Third

Michael Markowitz scored Cortland's first goal to tie the game 1:49 into the first period
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) scored two goals, including the game-tying tally with 12 seconds left in regulation, as Cortland rallied to tie visiting Fredonia, 3-3, in a SUNYAC matchup.

Cortland improved to 7-7-3 overall and sits in fifth place in the SUNYAC standings with eight points (3-5-2 record). Fredonia is now 4-7-5 overall and 0-4-3 in the conference. The Red Dragons and the Blue Devils also tied at Fredonia, 2-2, to start the season.

Cortland trailed 3-1 just more than 10 minutes into the game but held Fredonia scoreless over the final 54:50. Broderick scored with 4:05 left in the second to draw the Red Dragons within 3-2. The game stayed that way until Cortland eventually pulled freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) for an extra attacker with 30 seconds left in the third. The Red Dragons eventually got the puck to Broderick just to the right of the goal and he buried his 12th goal of the season to knot the game.

Fredonia finished with a 45-42 advantage in shots on goal. Weigman made 42 saves and Fredonia's Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, ON/Walkertown Jr.) stopped 39 shots, including four saves in overtime for each netminder.

Four of the game's six goals came in the first 10:10 of the first period. Taylor Bourne (Calgary, AB/Olds) opened the scoring for Fredonia with just 44 seconds elapsed off assists from Stephen Castriota (Bellport/NY Bobcats) and Garrett Moore (Arcade/Carlton Place Jr. A), but Cortland responded just over a minute later when junior Michael Markowitz (Staten Island/NY Bobcats) scored his fifth goal of the season off assists from freshman Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) and junior Mike Davie (Brooklyn/NY Apple Core).

The guests took a 2-1 lead on Jared Wynia's (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) power-play goal 4:19 into the first, assisted by Zach White (Taberg, NY/Portland Jr. A) and Jamie Young (Russell, OH/Walpole), and the advantage grew to 3-1 on a Damien Kulynych (Calbary, AB/Steinbach Pistons) goal, with assists credited to Marcus Anderson (Omskoldsvik, Sweden/Malmo Redhawks) and White.

Cortland failed to score on a Fredonia five-minute major early in the second period, but eventually broke through on Broderick's goal, assisted by senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) and freshman Cory Lauer (Mt. Juliet, TN/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots). Freshman Darren McCormick (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Zappia assisted on Broderick's late game-tying goal.
Both teams successfully killed off a power play during the five-minute overtime. Fredonia finished 1-for-5 and Cortland 0-for-5 on power-play chances.

Cortland will host Buffalo State Saturday at 7 p.m. in a SUNYAC game.
