Red Dragons Fall to #4 Oswego in SUNYAC Action

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Seven different players scored a goal as the nationally fourth-ranked Oswego hockey team defeated Cortland, 7-4, Saturday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena in the inaugural Military Appreciation Game. The Red Dragons fell to 7-9-3 overall and 3-7-2 in the SUNYAC with the loss, while the Lakers improved to 13-2-3 and 8-1-1.

Senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) led Cortland with two goals and one assist. Freshman Darren McCormick (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied one goal and two assists, freshman Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) netted a goal, freshman Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) recorded three assists and senior Jeff Vanzant (Barrie, ON/Peterborough Liftlock Stars) and freshman Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) contributed one assist. Freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northen Cyclones) made 31 saves in 36:57 before giving way to freshman Kollyn Jones (Cazenovia/New York PAL Islanders), who stopped 15 shots in 23:03.

Four different players each recorded one goal and one assist, while three others scored one goal apiece and sophomore Andrew Barton (Stratford, ON/Stratford Cullitons) chipped in with two assists. Sophomore goalie Matt Zawadzki (Fort Mill, SC/Nepean Raiders) stopped 24 shots in 50:29, and junior Justin Gilbert (Ottawa, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) made three saves in 9:31.

The Lakers built a 4-0 lead after the first period and extended the advantage to 5-0 just past the midway point of the second period. Zappia and McCann wrapped goals around Hulshof's score, and Oswego led 6-2 heading into the final period. McCormick made it 6-2 at 1:09 of the third period, and Zappia notched his team-high 19th goal of the season at 9:54 to pull Cortland to within 6-4. Gertsakis ended the momentum with a power-play goal at 11:32 for the 7-4 final.

The game raised funds for U.S. Hockey Players Support Our Troops with all proceeds to benefit military personnel and their families.
