Cortland Slips Past Visiting Oneonta, 109-106, After Final Relay Victory

Mark Hanifin won both the 1,000-yard and 100-yard freestyle races
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point), sophomore Dylan Burns (Cornwall), senior Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) and senior Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) was victorious in the meet's final event to lift the Red Dragons past Oneonta, 109-105, in a home dual meet.

Cortland trailed 101-96 prior to its final relay victory in 3:17.84. The Red Dragons also opened the meet with a win by Burns, junior Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), senior Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) and junior Reeve Callen (Oswego) in the 400-yard medley relay (3:34.58).

Senior Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) posted a pair of individual victories as he touched the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.85) and 100-yard freestyle (48.32). Strothenke won the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.28) and Callen won the 50-yard freestyle (22.17). Callen also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.49).

Spatzer finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.14) and 200-yard butterfly (2:02.22). Burns was the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle (22.47) and Jakubek placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.28).

Cortland will compete in its regular-season finale next Saturday, Feb. 3, at noon when it hosts Fredonia.
