NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team earned a spot in the SUNYAC postseason tournament after sweeping both Plattsburgh and Buffalo State in conference play in New Paltz.
The Red Dragons (16-15) finished with a 5-4 SUNYAC record and will be the fifth seed in the six-team conference tournament Nov. 6-8. Cortland will face fourth-seeded Oneonta in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m., with the entire tournament hosted by top-seeded Brockport.
During Saturday's play, junior setter
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) became the sixth player in school history to reach 3,000 career assists. Roberts registered 13 assists versus Plattsburgh and 24 against Buffalo State and now has 3,020 in three seasons as a Red Dragon.
Cortland defeated Plattsburgh 25-21, 25-13, 25-22 behind
Nicole Silberer's (Centereach) 10 kills.
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) totaled nine kills and a .297 attack percentage and
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) had six aces.
Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) led the Red Dragons with 13 digs, while
Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) and
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) finished with 10 digs each.
Vanessa Carmesin (Leverkusen, Germany/Landrat-Lucas Gymnasium) paced the squad with 25 assists.
Sam Colombo led Plattsburgh (7-18, 1-8) with 10 kills and 14 digs. Sydney Gabriel finished with 27 assists.
The Red Dragons closed the day with a 25-15, 25-19, 29-27 win over Buffalo State. May led Cortland with 11 kills with one error in 22 attempts for a .455 attack percentage along with three blocks.
Courtney Silberer added nine kills, three blocks and a .333 attack percentage and
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) ended with seven kills.
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) and Patora finished with 22 and 14 digs, respectively.
Buffalo State (10-16, 2-7) was led by Kayla Pyc's 10 kills and three aces and Ashleen Speen's eight kills.
Cortland will host St. John Fisher in its final home match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m.
