Box Score 2 ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. - The Cortland women's volleyball team concluded its regular-season schedule with wins over both Alvernia University and Elizabethtown College in matches played at Elizabethtown.
The Red Dragons (19-16) swept Alvernia, 25-20, 25-18, 25-13, and outlasted Elizabethtown in five sets, 23-25, 25-20, 25-12, 19-25, 15-12. Cortland is 4-7 in its 11 five-set matches this season.
Sophomore sisters
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) and
Nicole Silberer (Centereach) each registered 11 kills versus Alvernia (12-19). Courtney committed just one error in 22 attempts for a .455 attack percentage and Nicole had three errors in 23 attempts for a .348 attack percentage.
Junior
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) finished with nine kills, a .375 attack percentage and nine digs. Junior
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) ended with 36 assists (12 per set) and seven digs, junior
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led the team with 14 digs and five aces, and sophomore
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had six kills, a .278 attack percentage and two aces.
Kristen Sipling led Alvernia with eight kills.
Czeczotka paced Cortland in the win over Elizabethtown with 14 kills and five blocks. She ended with a .344 attack percentage and 13 digs. May recorded 12 kills and one error in 30 attempts for a .367 attack percentage and added three blocks, while sophomore
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) finished with nine kills and 11 digs.
Roberts distributed 43 assists and had 13 digs and McGuirk served seven aces and led the team with 18 digs. The Silberers chipped in with a combined 15 kills - eight by Courtney, along with five blocks, and seven by Nicole.
Mackenzie Garner, Janae Moran and Sarah Schneider each finished with 16 kills for Elizabethtown (18-14). Steph High doled out 51 assists.
Cortland trailed 6-3 in the decisive fifth set before scoring five straight points, four on Elizabethtown misplays, to take an 8-6 lead at the crossover. The hosts were within 9-8 after a Moran kill, but Cortland used a Czeczotka kill, a block by May and Czeczotka, and two McGuirk aces to go up 13-8. Elizabethtown got back within 14-12 before May's kill ended the match.
Cortland will face Oneonta in the SUNYAC tournament quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Brockport. Cortland is the fifth seed and Oneonta the fourth seed in the eight-team tournament. The winner will play Brockport, the top seed, in the semifinals Saturday.
