Red Dragons Dominant Throughout Roster in 182-72 Dual Win at Buffalo St.

Ally Baraban won the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke races and led off the winning 400-yard medley relay
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Five Red Dragons picked up two individual victories each as Cortland defeated host Buffalo State, 182-72, in a women's swimming and diving dual meet.

Freshman Elizabeth Connolly (Lockport) won the 100-yard freestyle (55.64) and 200-yard freestyle (2:01.35), senior Ally Baraban (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.08) and 200-yard backstroke (2:28.56), and senior Chelsey Simon (Oneida) captured the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.47) and 200-yard butterfly (2:18.17). Baraban also had the second-best time as an exhibition entry in the 200-yard individual medley (2:33.89).

Senior Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) took top honors in both diving events with 279.70 points on the 3-meter board and 261.45 points on the 1-meter board. Junior Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.43), and her effort of 2:29.03 in the 200-yard individual medley as an exhibition entry was the fastest in the race.

Junior Whitney Mietz (Rochester/Brighton) won the 50-yard freestyle (26.89). In the relays, Baraban, senior Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point), Simon and sophomore Kalee Warden (Dryden) won the 400 medley (4:26.86), while Connolly, Simon, freshman Halle King (Auburn/Skaneateles) and Mietz had the best time as an exhibition in the 200 freestyle (1:46.53).

Cortland took second as well in the 400 medley relay with junior Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley), junior Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), freshman Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) and freshman Paige Schrems (Holland) finishing in 4:32.81.

McGurk was runner-up in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.50) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.78). Freideman was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.26), Johnson placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:30.56), King was second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:51.20), and Walden was second in the 50-yard freestyle (27.01).

Other event runners-up for Cortland included: sophomore Kailey Smith (Endicott/Union-Endicott) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:46.14); senior Erin Smith (Bethpage) in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.31); senior Wiebke Dierkes (Cortland/F.L.-Woeste Gym.) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:33.03); and freshman Jackie Bors (Buffalo/North Tonawanda) in 3-meter diving (179.10 points).

Cortland returns to action on Friday-Satuday, December 4-5, at the Hamilton College Invitational.
