CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior
Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and senior
Brittany Murphy (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored goals less than three minutes apart early in the second half to lead the Cortland field hockey team to a 2-0 win versus Oneonta Wednesday afternoon in the SUNYAC Semifinals. The host Red Dragons advanced to the title game on Saturday, hosting New Paltz, a 2-1 winner over Geneseo in the other semifinal game.
Sophomore
Victoria Dean (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) collected an assist for Cortland (14-4), and freshman goalie
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made five saves.
Senior goalie Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) registered seven saves for the visiting Red Dragons (5-13). Seniors Holly VanDresar (Camden) and Rebecca Teta (Centereach/Sachem North) each contributed a defensive save.
After a scoreless first half in part due to Teta's defensive stop, Cortland wasted little time in grabbing the lead in the second half. On a loose ball in front of the cage, Stein ripped a 10-yard blast for her team high 15th goal of the season at 36:57.
Oneonta created a quality chance to tie the game just over two minutes later, but freshman Allyson Bilow's (Webster/Webster Thomas) shot from the left side was denied by Reinoehl, who was sprawled in front of the goal. Thirty-three seconds later, Murphy scored her fifth goal of the season on a one-time shot in front after Dean sent a cross into the circle from the right side that deflected off Servedio.
The visiting Red Dragons pressured Cortland with a flurry of penalty corners midway through the half but continued to come up empty. With time winding down, Oneonta senior Hannah Hayward (Glens Falls) had an excellent scoring chance off a penalty corner, but Reinoehl turned aside her point-blank shot with 4:35 remaining to keep the shutout intact.
